RAISING MONEY FOR THE SECOND LARGEST CANCER IN CHILDREN
We first decided to raise money in Christmas 1997, a few months after Luke had finished radiotherapy treatment and progressing well. It started in just a very small way by us asking family members to not give us adult presents but to donate the money instead to brain tumour research. We felt very strongly that this was the area where funds were needed. It is a known fact that radiotherapy can kill reproducing cancerous cells but it has no effect on dormant ones. Chemotherapy too has its successes with many cancers but not on brain tumours plus the administering of such toxic drugs to the brain is far more complicated than for other cancers. Once we learned more about brain tumours, the various types and their difficulty to treat with already established cancer treatments we realised with startling clarity that the only way children like Luke stood any chance in surviving this dreadful cancer was by injecting money into good quality research projects. 30 years ago Leukaemia sufferers faced the same poor projected cure rate as brain tumour sufferers of today but thanks to campaigners who have raised awareness and cash for research, treatment of this disease has a much brighter outlook - 70% cure rate and rising.
After Luke died in August 1998 John Marlow, Luke’s tennis coach, came up with an idea for a fundraiser and in May 1999 the first Luke Frost Games weekend was held with teams competing in a variety of fun sports & games. It was a tremendous success both in terms of raising money and as a fantastic event - a lovely memorial to Luke.
We are delighted to announce that we have joined forces with the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, The largest single brain tumour research charity in the UK. Together we hope to continue the search for a cure for this most devastating cancer.
